So I work/worked as a receptionist at a Yoga studio. I have been here about 6 years now and its been a very educational time for me. I have discovered many things about people and many things about myself.
I came from the world of corporate america, where you sat in cubicles and stared at a computer screen for 8-9-10 hours a day and then you went home. Some days there were meetings where you all strutted and pranced and tried to be the smartest idiot in a room full of them. Some days there were snacks and fun stuff like donughts. Some days there were tears. In the midst of all that though there were lessons to be learned, people to be met and bonded with. Then it was time to leave. I spent about 5 years (not much time compared to some) in Corporate America and I am forever grateful to have gotten out of it. But now that I have had some time to reflect on my time served I know I learned some important things.
Top Six Things Learned in Corporate America:
1) Unless you are a Doctor, Lawyer, Social Worker or other Life Saving type of Employee, no work is more important than your soul.
2) Some amazingly fun and funny people work at Corporate America
3) People can be horribly cruel and superficial
4) People can also be amazingly kind and giving
5) Corporate America is a great place to find your work ethic, its also a great place to learn how to slack off while looking busy.
6) Sales Men are agents of the devil
Its funny, I have such a distaste for the corporate world, it screwed with my head, tensed me up and sucked out my soul but when I think about it now I realize that I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't experienced that world. It served its purpose and led me on to my current employement at the Yoga Studio. It is in this place that I found so much of what I was looking for. Where I have made tons of mistakes, but they were made around people who don't judge you by your mistakes, they love you no matter what. Which was a far cry from the world I had come from, where your mistakes were what defined you as a worker. If you couldnt get stuff done quickly and correctly you were useless. At the same time, that kind of pressure makes you a more efficient worker bee. You learn quickly to work fast and to do your work correctly so that you can be praised instead of condemned.
In the end though, I think what really matters, what really gets the whole barrel of monkey's rolling and your mojo gunning for adventure is that you are the captain of this ship. You determine how happy you are, how sad you are, how fulfilled you are.
Make your own choices. Be your own person and maybe, happiness will be right there with you. If you let it.
